We
are very fortunate to have a number of sanctuaries and centres
in our region that rescue, rehabilitate and release back into
the wild orphaned,
injured and ill native wildlife. These organizations are
registered Canadian charities that do not receive any government
funding. Each is run by a volunteer board of directors, few or
no paid employees and many dedicated volunteers. Wildlife
rehabilitation centres in Ontario must have at least one
employee or volunteer who is an MNR-authorized wildlife
custodian.
My
daughter and I
fulfill a variety of niches with local sanctuaries and
centres. We
assist
with wildlife transportation and release,
sponsor animals undergoing rehabilitation, and
volunteer at special events. I
also help with promotion and fund-raising, create educational
materials, and sit on the board of
Aspen Valley Wildlife
Sanctuary.
My students
sometimes pitch in, too. They enjoy
wildlife food drives (click link to download PPT slide show), fund raising, persuasive letter
writing, and
helping to develop and pilot educational materials, as
curriculum-based outreach across a variety of subject areas.

supporting particular wildlife sanctuaries and centres in our region. If you feel so
inclined, we would love it if you would join us in offering a
donation or some volunteer time.
