Canoe Trip Log #2:  Algonquin Park, Aug. 8-12, 1995 

Route:

Round Trip -- Canoe Lake to McIntosh Lake, via Tepee, Fawn, Little Doe, Tom Thomson and Ink Lakes; back via Straight Shore, Rosswood and Brûlé Lakes, Potter Lake and Creek

2 X 16' Nova Craft Kevlar (50 lbs. each)

DAY 1 (Tuesday)

Travel: Portage Store, Canoe Lake to Lake Tom Thomson, via Tepee, Fawn and Little Doe Lakes

Time: 1:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. = 3 hrs, 15 min.
(NOTE: Times in this Trip Log are based upon two trips across each portage -- one with canoe and food; one with gear)

Weather: Sunny and warm

Canoe distance: 12.5 km

Portages: 1

Portage distance: 100m (with river short cut)

Camp: Lake Tom Thomson, on point facing portage entrance to Ink Lake

Supper: Chicken, rice salad, cheese, cookies, trail mix, herbal tea, coffee, hot choc.

Camp events, evening: Moose feeding in marsh beside camp from just after 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.; "Shoe-tossing contest (gotta hang that food pack somehow!)"; Campfire; Incredibly bright full moon

Overnight: Skies clear

Camp events, the following morning: Lovely view of mist on lake and marsh from 7:30-8 a.m. Sighting of moose cow and calf as we were leaving camp at 10:30 a.m.


Day 2 (Wednesday)

Travel: Lake Tom Thomson to McIntosh Lake, via Ink Lake

Time: 11:00 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. = 4 hrs, 20 min

Weather: Sunny and warm

Canoe distance: 2.5 km

Portages: 1 Portage distance: 2320m (took 3 1/2 hrs!!)

Camp: Point on east end of McIntosh Lake

Supper: Beans, beans & more beans, pita bread, granola bars, coffee, herbal tea, hot choc.

Camp events, evening: Drinking half of the water in McIntosh Lake!!; Discovering the many uses of Absorbine Junior; "Giddy star gazing"; The big trek to the latrine by flashlight; Lucie's dog sleeps in Marg and Louise's "Animal Shelter"; Owl hooting; Loon symphony in the middle of the night (at least 4 loons calling).

Overnight: Skies clear


DAY 3 (Thursday)

Travel: McIntosh Lake to Potter Lake, via Straight Shore, Rosswood and Brûlé Lakes

Time: 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. = 5 hrs

Weather: Cloudy and warm

Canoe distance: 7.5 km

Portages: 4

Portage length: 655m + 975m + 400 m* + 725m = 2755m (* due to low water, this portage was over twice the listed length)

Travel events: Lucie's dog very frightened on portage from Straight Shore Lake to Rosswood Lake...lots of bear fur and droppings evident -- we sang and smacked canoe paddles together to alert any bears to our presence!; Lunch en route at Brûlé Lake; Didn't see any other people all day...we had this part of the interior to ourselves!!

Camp: Potter Lake, on point facing south about halfway down the lake

Supper: Pasta, bannock layer cake, herbal tea, coffee, hot choc.

Camp events, evening: Surprise Party for Louise!! (to celebrate Chris' and her 5th wedding anniversary)...and boy, WAS SHE SURPRISED -- bannock cake with pink frosting, jelly beans and candles, balloons, five-foot banner, greeting card; KUDOS to Sandee for keeping Louise busy while Lucie and Margaret frosted the cake and decorated the campsite for the party!; Campfire

Quote of the day: Lucie to Louise -- We were going to invite guests to your party, but we couldn't find anyone to invite!!!

Overnight: Overcast, electrical storm 4:30 - 6:00 a.m.


DAY 4 (Friday)

A day-off in camp!!!

Weather: a.m. overcast; p.m. sunny and windy

Out-of-camp events, lunch time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.-- reconnaissance mission to Potter Creek (everyone)...water levels look sufficient for travel to Canoe Lake tomorrow

Camp events, mid-afternoon: Reading (everyone); Swimming (Sandee & Lucie); Cribbage (Margaret & Louise); Writing postcards & sleeping (Margaret); "House cleaning" & "toe surgery" (Louise).

Out-of-camp event, late afternoon: Hiking (all but Margaret)

Supper: Kraft dinner, bannock, trail mix, raisins, dried apricots & dates, coffee, herbal tea, hot choc.

Camp events, evening:  Water ballet between canoe and Loon (Margaret, Lucie & Sandee); Campfire

Overnight: Overcast, rain off and on


DAY 5 (Saturday)

Travel: Potter Lake to Canoe Lake, via Potter Creek

Time: 10 a.m. - 1:45 p.m. = 3 hrs, 45 min

Weather: Sunny and warm

Canoe distance: 9.5 km

Portages: 2 (we were able to skip 2 other portages-- 65m & 95m-- by wading downriver with the canoes)

Portage distance: 740m + 390m = 1130m

Travel events: Sandee's backpack frame breaks sometime during 1st portage...repaired with duct tape and tent pegs at beginning of 2nd portage!; Up-close-and-personal with a Great Blue Heron on Potter Creek; "Shooting the 2-foot waterfall" (over a beaver dam in the canoes).

Overall distance traveled: 38.3 kilometers (84 % water travel; 16% portages)
